As part of our commitment to the development of British snowsports, at grass
roots level, one of the things we provide at SNO!zone is BASI Level 1 instructor
courses. These are aimed at the up and coming snowsports enthusiast who is interested
in developing themselves and their knowledge, of their sport further. These courses
are made up of 4 components: 5 day technical and teaching assesment.
Child Protection module

and are designed to train and qualify individuals, enabling them to teach within
a controlled environemt in the UK e.g. dry slope, indoor slope.
BASI LEVEL 1 QUALIFICATION SKI AND SNOWBOARD
5 Day Technical and Teaching Assesment (BASI Level 1 course) £395.00
Before applying for a Snowboard/Ski Level 1 Instructor course, students must
be able to:
Ride or ski confidently on red runs, linking rhytmical small radius turns, close
to the falline (snowboard) or ski parallel turns consistenly, coping with varying
terrain.
Have at least 16 weeks experience of riding/skiing on slope and probably more.
Have an understand of client care.
Any clients who are unsure of whether they meet the necessary standard to attend
a Level 1 course, please ask the advice of a qualified BASI member.
Pre Requisites
The following pre requisites must be met before attending a ski or snowboard
Level 1 Instructor course students must have/be:
Have read and understood all of the course terms and conditions
Be a competent or advanced recreational rider/skier. .
Be 16 years of age or older (although any qualifications gained will be withheld
until the attendees 18th birthday.)
The Course
This is a 5 day training and assesment course which is run seperately for skiers
and snowboarders. The following subjects will be covered and assesed during the
course:
Riding Safetly
Planning, conducting and evaluating an instructing session.
Participating in an accident and emergency activity
knowing and understanding how to improve personal riding/skiing and instructing
performance.
You will need to have an understanding of:
The Central Theme and Beyond
The FIS Rules of Conduct
The Principles of Snowboard/Ski teaching
The structure of Snowsports within the UK
The roles of the Snowports agencies in the UK
Dealing with accidents and emergencies
Course Costs
The total course cost for this course is £395.00.
This includes five days slope use thorughout the duration of the course.
1 years associate membership with BASI (needed to gain license)
Five days parking throughout the course (if applicable)
All course materials
Five days tuition from BASI qualified tutor.
Please be aware a minimum deposit of £100.00 (non refundable/transferable) is
required to book and confirm a course place.
Course Outcomes
The BASI level 1 course is based on a 'pass or fail' criteria in regards to personal
performance and understanding, and teaching practice. Succesful students will
be issued a certificate and be able to work within a controlled environement with
novice and early intermediate snowboarders. On completion of this Licensed Instructor
Level, students are individually debriefed and advised on the degree of preperation
required before presenting themselves for the BASI Level 2 Instructor training course,
as well as their competence to work within the controlled environments of the
dry slopes and snow slopes.
Instructor Level 1 Resit Policy
Normally BASI operates a five day resit policy. However, specific to the Instructor
Level 1 module, in most cases a one day resit will only be necessary. Feedback
will be given by the course tutor, should you not pass the course originally as
to which areas you need to improve performance in in order to pass.
Course Completion
Ski and Snowboard Level 1 instructor licenses can only be issued to a student
who has fulfilled the following conditions.
The student must: have completed and passed all aspects of the Level 1 Instructor
training.
hold a current first aid certificate (as specified) issued
by an organisation recognised by the Health and Safety Executive.
have paid the current membership fee to BASI. (yearly
subscription)
have attended the Child Protection module.
have logged 35 hours snow school experience
be 18 years old or above.
